How It Works

What is FIRE?

FIRE stands for "Financial Independence, Retire Early"; you are financially independent once your invested portfolio is large enough that its returns cover your annual spending indefinitely.

The 4% Rule and Your FIRE Number

The safe withdrawal rate (SWR) defines how much you can withdraw each year without depleting your portfolio. Your FIRE number is simply your annual spending divided by the SWR; a 4% rate implies a target of 25× your annual spending, while a 3.5% rate implies about 28.6×.

The Flavors of FIRE
  • Lean FIRE: financial independence on a lean, minimalist budget with lower annual spending.
  • Regular FIRE: financial independence that covers your current lifestyle and spending.
  • Fat FIRE: financial independence with a generous budget for a more comfortable lifestyle.
  • Coast FIRE: the point where your existing investments will grow to your FIRE number by your traditional retirement age without any further contributions; you still work to cover current expenses, but you no longer need to save for retirement.
Why Savings Rate Matters Most

Your savings rate (savings divided by take-home income) is the single biggest driver of your timeline; a higher savings rate both grows your portfolio faster and lowers the spending you need to cover, pulling your FIRE date dramatically closer.
